The Ghost of Millburn Sample Set: 1972, 1976, 1980
This is a sample set containing three different vintages from the long lost Millburn distillery – 1972, 1976 and 1980
The sample set contains three 30ml samples of the following whiskies:
Millburn 1972 Vintage, Connoisseurs Choice – bottled 1995
This phenomenal whisky from the long lost Millburn distillery was distilled back in 1972 before being bottled in 1995 by Gordon & MacPhail as part of their legendary Connoisseurs Choice series.
The whisky was bottled at 40% abv.
Our Tasting Notes:
Nose: Chimney soot. Dusty cupboards. Grilled pineapples. Extra virgin olive oil.
Palate: Seville marmalade. Gentle liquorice. Barley sugars. Liquid smoke. Hazelnuts. Slightly bitter oak.
Finish: Soft caramel. Kiss of spice. Honey crumpets.
Millburn 1976 Vintage 25 Year Old, Old Malt Cask – bottled 2001
This is a brilliant single cask Millburn 1976 Vintage 25 Year Old that was bottled by Douglas Laing for their iconic Old Malt Cask range.
The whisky was distilled in August 1976, spent 25 years maturing in a single cas before being bottled in May 2002 at 50%.
Millburn is one of our favourite lost distilleries and this expression is a fantastic example of Millburn’s sadly lost signature Highland style.
Our Tasting Notes:
Nose: Strawberry Yoghurt. Milk bottles. Guava. Rosemary. Orange juice pulp. Delicate saline note. Toasted marshmallows. Alpine forest.
Palate: Papaya. Spiced apple pie. Hot croissants. Earthy profile. Coconut husks. Warm malt. Marmalade.
Finish: Nutmeg. Orchard fruits. Vanilla pods. Honey roasted almonds. Slightly saline finish.
Millburn 1980 Vintage 18 Year Old Single Cask, Gordon & MacPhail Reserve – bottled 1998
A cracker of a dram and the strongest Millburn ever bottled…
This is a Millburn 1980 Vintage single cask, 18 Year Old cask strength release from Gordon & MacPhail.
Distilled in 1980, this Millburn spent 18 years maturing in a single cask (cask no #2021) before being bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in 1998 exclusively for The World of Whiskies.
This was bottled at a ridiculous 67% abv.
Our Tasting Notes:
Nose: Candle snuffer. Dried wedding flowers. Wisp of smoke. Old paint melting in the heat. Industrial warehouse. Ripe apricots.
Palate: Aniseed. Plum compôte. Vanilla pods. Amphorae jars.
Finish: Star anise. Shaved ginger. Distant smoke. Deep oak. Emerging wax note – a candle moments before it is lit.
Millburn Distillery – Closed
The oldest of the lost Inverness triumvirate, Millburn began life in 1807 as a farm distillery on the East side of Inverness – a far cry from the development that Inverness and the former location of the distillery would eventually go on to witness.
Unfortunately, in 1985 the distillery was closed just two years after its Inverness relatives – Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor were shut during the tragic whisky loch of the 1980s.
During its lifetime Millburn produced a highly acclaimed malt that was known for being a lightly smoky whisky with notes of silky honey, grilled tropical fruits and gentle spice.
