Mortlach fans rejoice – this is a Mortlach 1989 & 1990 vintage sample set that provides a great opportunity to compare ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ matured in both sherry and ex-bourbon.

Please note: this sample set is for a 30ml sample of both of the drams mentioned below.

Mortlach 1989 Vintage Berry Bros & Rudd (46% vol)

This is a fantastic Mortlach 1989 vintage bottling by the iconic Berry Brothers & Rudd and a rare old example of this famous beast in bourbon as opposed to its typical sherried preference. It’s a great example that showcases the muscular power of Mortlach’s spirit.

Distilled in 1989 this release is a vatting of two casks (no.973 & 974) and was subsequently bottled in 2003 at 46%.

Our Tasting Notes:

Nose: So fresh – wave after wave of orchard notes. Elegant yet powerful, Mortlach’s muscular weight is still shining through. Fruit salad. Sandalwood. Kiwi skins. Gooseberry jam. New candles. Fragrant spring walks.

Palate: Medley of fresh pear & apple notes. Yellow raisins. Beeswax. Pine nuts. New leather. Wet turf. Walnuts. Sponge cake.

Finish: Apple strudel & vanilla custard. Nutmeg. Mead.

Mortlach 1990 Signatory Vintage 13 Year Old (43% vol)

This is a single cask Mortlach 1990 Vintage 13 Year Old that was bottled by Signatory Vintage in 2003.

The whisky was distilled on the 24th May 1990 before spending 13 years in a single sherry butt (butt no. 3675), before being bottled on the 9th December 2003. This whisky was bottled at 43%.

Our Tasting Notes:

Nose: Rancio. Walnuts. Pancetta lardons. Faint sulphur. Raisins. Worn leather. Raspberry jam. Bone dry oak.

Palate: Fig rolls. Dark chocolate. Mince pies. Delicate chilli. Dry hay. Almonds. Cigar ash.

Finish: Sandalwood. Lightly roasted coffee. Orange peels. Fruit cake.
