Laphroaig 1989 Vintage 15 Year Old, Old Malt Cask – 30ml
This is a single cask 1989 vintage 15 Year Old Laphroaig that was bottled by Douglas Laing in 2005 as part of their excellent Old Malt Cask range.
The whisky was matured in a refill butt and bottled at 50% abv (as are all other Old Malt Cask) releases.
This release was limited to 619 bottles.
1980s Laphroaig is special and distillate from this period typically contains waves of powerful but carefully domesticated smoke, rich tar and fire roasted fruits. This Douglas Laing release is an excellent example.
Our Tasting Notes:
Nose: Ash. Tar. Sriracha. Old candles. Crystallised papaya. Crispy bacon.
Palate: Intense peat notes supported by charred citrus and a slightly salty kick. Tobacco. Smoked salmon. Dry wood.
Finish: Coal tar. Further bacon notes. Touch of sulphur. Earthy finish.
This is a beautiful and flavoursome Laphroaig and well worth trying!
Laphroaig – Active Distillery
Like it’s south shore sibling Ardbeg, Laphroaig was also founded in 1815 on the Isle of Islay. The distillery is part of what is referred to as the Kildalton triumvirate alongside Lagavulin and Ardbeg.
It’s signature medicinal, tarry flavour is iconic, remarkably consistent and over time has resulted in Laphroaig becoming the best selling Islay malt in the world.
It’s believed over 90% of Laphroaig’s stock is aged in American white oak barrels, with ex-sherry casks typically being reserved by the distillery for longer term maturation.
